PARACELSUS, Philippus von Hohenheim, known as (1493-1541). Astronomia Magna: oder die gantze Philosophia sagax der grossen und kleinen Welt. Edited by Michael Toxites. Frankfurt: Martin Lechler for Hieronymous Feyerabend, 1571.
2° (319 x 202mm). With blank S4 and without final blank. Title in red and black with large woodcut printer's device by Jobst Amman. (Evenly browned throughout, marginal dampstaining, some marginal spotting, occasional light soiling, small loss in the margin of the last leaf.) 20th-century calf, spine lettered in gilt, sides ruled in blind (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: ?Johann Ofseck (title inscription in an early hand presenting the work to:) -- Benedictine Abbey, ?Augsburg.
FIRST EDITION OF HIS MAJOR WORK, expounding a theory of analogy between microcosm and macrocosm to unite various disciplines including chemistry, medicine, occult philosophy, and cosmology. Few of his works were published in his lifetime, due to his determined condemnation of traditional science, which brought him into frequent conflict with the medical profession and university authorities. 'There is no doubt of Paracelsus' essential influence, both direct and indirect, on medical reform... what is in the end most remarkable in Paracelsus' work is that he achieved real advances in chemistry and medicine through the revival and original development of lore that had been kept alive only at a very low level... it is difficult to overrate the effect of Paracelsus' achievement on the development of medicine and chemistry' (DSB). Bibliotheca Esoterica 3521 ('of great ratity'); Sudhoff 131; Wellcome 4782; not in Caillet.
