Atlas volume only, broadsheet 2° (680 x 510mm). With the half-title. 80 plates, of which 70 lithographed, 8 aquatinted and 2 engraved, by Englemann and Debucourt after Forbin, Castellan, Deseynes, Fragonard, Isabey, Vernet and others. (Spotting throughout.) Contemporary red morocco, spine lettered in gilt and gilt in compartments, sides with border of gilt fillets and blind roll tool, edges gilt, blue moiré silk linings (extremities rubbed, sides scuffed).

FIRST EDITION. 'ONE OF THE FIRST IMPORTANT FRENCH BOOKS TO USE LITHOGRAPHY ON A GRAND SCALE' (Blackmer). One of only 325 copies, this one in full red morocco with blue silk linings. Forbin succeeded Denon as Director of Museums in 1816, and the following year set off on a year-long buying expedition to the Levant. Most of the fine plates show scenes in Egypt and Syria.
