PERRIN DU LAC, François Marie. Voyage dans les deux Louisianes et chez les nations sauvages du Missouri, par les États-Unis, l'Ohio et les Provinces qui le bordent en 1801, 1802, et 1803. Lyon: Bruyset aîné and Buynand, 1805.

8o (209 x 133 mm). Engraved folding map and plate showing a mammoth skeleton printed on pale blue paper at end (a few short tears). (Some occasional pale spotting.) Original blue decorated paper wrappers, uncut (section at foot of spine lacking, some chips); blue cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the Lyon imprint. The Voyage dans les Deux Louisianes contains the "earliest published map of the trans-Missouri region which can be said to display even the faintest resemblance of accuracy"; it is here present in a striking, strong impression. Although it is disputed whether or not Perrin du Lac made an expedition himself, his book remains one of the most important accounts of the early fur trade with Indians on the upper Missouri. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, the only copy sold at auction in the last thirty years was the Siebert copy, sold 28 October 1999, lot 793. Clark, Old South 2:52, 114; Field Indian Bibliography 1204; Graff 3254; Howes P-244; Monaghan 1176; Rader 2647; Sabin 61102; Streeter sale III:1773 (second, Paris, issue); Wagner-Camp-Becker 3:1; Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 256.
