"MEAT AS MANURE" AN ANGRY PRIME MINISTER CHASTISES CHURCHILL FOR WASTING SURPLUS WARTIME SUPPLIES

Lloyd George is furious after reading a story in that morning's Times detailing the disposal of vast amounts of food and other supplies in the army's depot in Abbeville. Titled "Meat as manure: Sale at Abbeville Dump: The Outcome of Delay," the piece accused the government of failing to sell off the surplus in the first two years after the armistice when there was--Lloyd George thinks--a more favorable market. Now they were being sold "when things are very flat. I am told this delay will cost the Exchequer tens of millions." He is uncertain whether the fault lies primarily with Churchill as Minister of Munitions or to War Office head Lord Inverforth, so he has decided to call both on the carpet. He is certain, however, that heads must roll: "the delay which has occurred is inexcusable and the matter ought to be thoroughly probed to the bottom and the responsible persons dealt with severely."
