Lot Essay

The elaborate headdresses in the two drawings of women are closely comparable to those in a drawing by Stefano in the Louvre (F. Viatte, Dessins Italiens du Musée du Louvre: Les Dessins de Stefano della Bella, Paris, 1974, no. 547, illustrated p. 243). They may also be related to those in Stefano’s series of etchings, Plusieurs Testes Coiffées a la Persienne, published in 1650 (see De Vesme 186 in particular).
