Lot Essay

This is likely to be a French Channel port, possibly the end of the north arm at Boulogne. The two masted lugger at the centre is a Boulogne sailing trawler, sometimes called a ‘chasse maree’ lugger and a steam packet can be seen at the left.

We are grateful to Dr. Pieter van der Merwe, General Editor and Curator, Royal Museums Greenwich for his help with this catalogue entry.
