Lot Essay

Brabazon inherited the family estates in 1848 and
1858 which gave him financial security and enabled
him to concentrate on his passion for watercolour
painting. He spent part of each year travelling,
first exploring the Continent and in the 1860s and
1870s he went to Africa, India and the Middle
East. He rarely dated his work and kept a diary
sporadically. The architecture in the present work
suggests that it is possibly executed in Tangiers.
A comparable work can be seen in C. Lewis-Hind,
Hercules Brabazon Brabazon 1821-1906 His Art
and Life, London, 1912, p. 50, pl. 13.
