Lot Essay

Kelly was born in Workington, Cumbria and it is this connection to the North which inspires the majority of his subject matter. Chiefly he loved to draw the industrial towns of west Cumbria and the surrounding countryside. He is also celebrated for his illustrated letters to his friends. Since his death there have been successful solo exhibitions of his work at Castlegate, Cumbria and Messum’s, London.
