A FRENCH 'MLE.1896' CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD FOR A GENERAL OFFICER
CHÂTELLERAULT, DATED '1897'
With bright fullered single-edged blade marked 'SABRE D'OFFICER DE CAVALERIE MLE.1896 - MANUF.RE D'ARMES DE CHAT/LT 1897' and with the initials 'JH' along the back-edge, hilt comprising pierced gilt-brass guard cast and chased in relief with scrollwork, foliage and a medusa-mask, ribbed black composite grip bound with twisted wire, and cast and chased gilt-brass pommel (cap polished) ornamented with a laurel wreath and with two applied silver stars, in correct burnished steel scabbard with single ring for suspension
35 1/4in. (89.5cm.) blade
It is believed the presence of the silver stars on the pommel indicate this was owned by a senior general officer
