Lot Essay

Franz Zach (C.1818-1881) was a leading Bohemian glass engraver who specialised in engraving on heavy forms executed in thick cased glass, such as the stag in the present lot. He was also a pioneer of cameo techniques. Zach worked in Munich, mostly via the retailer Franz Steigerwald. A discussion of his work can be found in the article by Leonard and Gypsy Rakow, 'Franz Paul Zach, 19th-century Bohemian Master Glass Engraver', Journal of Glass Studies, Vol. 25, 1983, pp. 195-200.
