Lot Essay

The Pilot Boat New York was Antonio Jacobsen's favorite steam vessel to paint, twenty-three versions survive today. Proud pilot boat ship captains must have been Jacobsen's most frequent clients. The Sandy Hook Pilot Station was often included in portraits of other ships to clearly define the location of the ships. This portrait of the New York includes two other ships, an ocean liner with four smoke stacks, possibly the Lusitania, and a four masted sailing ship.
