Lot Essay

This dish belongs to a small group of Chinese porcelains with American historical subjects once thought to date to the 1876 Centennial, but now understood to be circa 1926 for the Sesquicentennial. See R.W. Fuchs II and J.L. Mass, Deciphering The Declaration of Independence on Chinese Export Porcelain, American Ceramics Circle Journal, 2008, for the authors' extensive art historical and scientific research into this fascinating porcelain made in response to the burgeoning interest in American decorative art.
