Lot Essay

John Russell Taylor, reviewing the I. C. A. exhibition in The Times on 1 November 1978, describes the landscapes as the real revelation of the show. Colour often seems like an easy option: easy to make a splash with it, much harder to use it with controlled economy. Just look at the very first photograph on the right....It is of a stone-built cottage painted white, against a wine-dark sky, with a patch of darkly incandescent green at its base. And it captures, once for all, a kind of light and atmosphere I have experienced but never seen exactly got down by any painter or photographer before....
