A FRENCH SILVER-MOUNTED JAPANESE IVORY JUG
MARK OF JOSEPH ALEXANDRE MARTEL, PARIS, CIRCA 1900 (ACTIVE 1888/1914)
The jug formed from a section of tusk carved with a large group of monkeys fighting over a basket of fruit, the monkeys' eyes outlined in black, the base incised with a beetle disguising a natural flaw in the ivory (a common feature of Japanese craftsmen), the silver mounts and handle in the form of foliate fronds
