Lot Essay

Dr Susanne Thesing has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Sanary-sur-Mer, Provence is one of a series of landscapes created during Rudolf Levy’s stay in the South of France between 1924 and 1926. This series of works marks the beginning of a new period in his artist practice; he repeatedly depicted hills, views of the sea and houses in a Provençale landscape. Levy applies colour with energetic and wide brushstrokes giving the viewer a sense of dynamism and rhythm, revealing the wild beauty of nature in Provence.
