Lot Essay

The present commode à vantaux is undoubtedly inspired by a commode similarly inlaid with a ribbon-tied basket of flowers flanked by trellis parquetry supplied by Jean-François Leleu (d. 1807) in 1772 to Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé (d. 1818). The commode was commissioned for the Prince’s bedroom at the Palais Bourbon and is currently in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris, (OA 9589).
