AFTER THE MODEL BY CHARLES CRESSENT, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
The rectangular gilt-tooled black leather-inset top with moulded surround and rocaille clasps to the corners, above a brass-banded frieze fronted by three drawers, with three simulated drawers to the reverse, the sides centred by female Bacchic masks, on cabriole legs headed by espagnolettes and terminating in acanthus-wrapped paw sabots, with paper retailers label 'Georg Kofoed's Mobeletablissement'

Lot Essay

This bureau plat à espagnolettes is after the celebrated model attributed to Charles Cressent, acquired by the Mobilier National for the Palais Compiègne in 1863 and today at the Château de Versailles. It was shown at the exposition retrospective de l’Union centrale, Paris in 1882, which undoubted affirmed its popularity and encouraged ébénistes of the day to copy it, such as François Linke who made the model under Index Number 795: an example of which sold Christie’s, London, 29 March 2007, lot 58 (£60,000).
