Christen Købke is regarded as probably the best known painter of the Danish Golden Age of painting in the first half of the 19th century. In 1838 he received a stipend from the Royal Danish Academy of Art to travel to Italy which he did so until his return Copenhagen in 1840. The folio of drawings offered here are from this trip to Italy and show him in typical fashion for artists touring Italy at this time, copying the church frescoes of the early Italian masters of the 13th and 14th centuries. Included are sheets after Taddeo Gaddi and Cimabue form churches such as that of Assisi, Perugia and Santa Croce in Florence.
