Lot Essay
Choo is a mid-career Korean artist who creates large-scale photorealistic works of men with disfigured torsos and faces. The monochromatic figures appear to be made of paper that crumbles and dissolves. Choo is representing what he perceives to be the inner turmoil and hypocrisy that people hide behind a façade of composure. He critiques the loss of innocence and purity in a materialistic and immoral society.
The artist earned a BA from Young-nam University in 1999 and MA from Young-nam University in 2008. He had one-person exhibitions at the Daegu Culture and Art Center in 2005; Gallery Maek-hyang, Daegu, in 2006; Gallery Somi, Seoul, in 2008; and Shin Gallery, New York, in 2013.
