Lot Essay

The small fishing village of Mariakerke near Ostend was much loved by Ensor and became the subject of six etchings (see lots 108-112, 122, 127). The small church of 'Our Lady of the Dunes’ was particular dear to him and during his lifetime he successfully petitioned for it to be protected by law. Ensor lies buried in the small graveyard next to the church.
