Lot Essay

Born in Tianjin and a student of painting since the age of fifteen, Wang Shuhui emphasized traditional painting styles and aesthetics. In particular, she based her painting style on the Ming-dynasty masters Qiu Ying (1495-1552) and Chen Hongshou (1598-1652). Yet she also incorporated such Western techniques as anatomy and one-point perspective. Although Wang Shuhui focused on painting images of women, such as the example here of a musician, she became well known for her many comic books.
