A BYZANTINE DOUBLE-SIDED GOLD AND ENAMEL PENDANT
CIRCA 11TH-12TH CENTURY A.D.
With the half figures of the frontally facing Virgin wrapped in blue and red garments on one side and on the other side the frontally facing Christ, one hand raised in benediction, the other holding the gospels, each identifying inscriptions "Mother of God" and "Jesus Christ" outlined in metal strip, in gold mount with suspension loop
7/8 in. (2 cm.) diam.
Provenance
Private collection, New Zealand, acquired prior to 2000; and thence by descent to the present owner.
