The tapering, high-shouldered jar is decorated with rust-colored splashes of slip that have fired matte in contrast to the lustrous black glaze that falls from the bottom of the short, brown-glazed neck to an irregular line lower on the body above a thin brown wash. The mouth rim is unglazed and the interior is covered with a brown glaze wash. The similarly glazed cover is domed above the wide, everted rim and has a small finial.

Lot Essay

A bowl and cover with similar black glaze and russet splashes, dated to the 11th-12th century, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, vol. 10, Tokyo, 1980, no. 161. See also, another bowl and cover with russet splashes, also dated to the 12th century and formerly in the Falk Collection, sold at Christie's New York, 20 September 2001, lot 83.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence no. C114a11 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
