Lot Essay

Shian is the hao or style-name of Liu Yong (1719-1805), the pre-eminent scholar-official during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods. Liu Yong is regarded as one of the most influential calligraphers of the period.

For a carved bamboo brush pot with the signature Shaoxi, dated 19th century, see Ip Yee and L. Tam, Chinese Bamboo Carving (I), Hong Kong, 1978, p. 298-99, no. 82.
