LATE QING/REPUBLIC PERIOD
The rectangular panel is well-carved in high relief with a moonlit scene of a lady seated beneath the arching branches of a plum tree while playing the pipa, all reserved on a diaper ground. The integral, red lacquer frame is carved with further plum branches on a different diaper ground. An inscription carved in relief in the lower right corner reads Zhu Chen ke (carved by Zhu Chen). A square seal below reads Zhu Chen. The lower left corner is carved with a seal reading Sun Guoxin yin (seal of Sun Guoxin). The panel is embellished at the top with a metal mount for hanging.

This panel probably depicts a scene from Pipa ji (The Story of the Lute) and shows Wuniang on her way to the capital.
