Lot Essay

Compare the silver-mounted gilt-lacquer chest with similar dragon and phoenix decoration sold at Christie's New York, 22 March 2012, lot 1758.
Gilt-lacquered chests decorated in gesso with dragons and/or phoenix, appear to be part of a group of imperial furnishings and accoutrements which were used to hold both seals and jade tablets.
