Lot Essay

The 19th century hand at the base of the painting identifies the sitter as ‘ sirdar gorlabsingh atarewalia’ which probably refers to the brother of the more well-known Sher Singh Atariwala who is recorded as Captain Sardar Gulab Singh Atariwala, (1827-1887). Gulab Singh, having been arrested during the second Anglo-Sikh war he was later released after volunteering to side with the British in the 1857 uprising. In reward for his services he was granted territory in Awadh and was later permitted to return to the Punjab in 1872. He passed away in 1887.
