BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas (1703-1772). Carte des Lacs du Canada. Paris, 1744.

Engraved map of the Great Lakes, image 293 x 456 mm (310 x 472 mm sheet). (Trimmed closely, upper margin and half of outer margin renewed.)

Drawing from notes and manuscript charts compiled by the Jesuit priest, explorer and historian, Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix, Bellin improved configurations of the lakes and added greatly to the toponyms. Many Indian villages, army forts, trading posts, missions, rivers and portages are named. There is considerable detail along all the coastlines of the lakes, excepting the southern border of Lake Erie, where Bellin comments (in French), "This coast is almost unknown." Second state, from Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix, Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France, Paris, 1744. Kershaw 947.
