An early copy of this work, Persian manuscript on paper, 135ff., each folio with 12ll. of elegant black nasta'liq script, sometimes arranged in two columns with black-ruled gold double divisions, text within gold, black and blue rules, the vasali margins of pink paper, with nine finely executed original illustrations, some margins illuminated in gold with figures and foliage, opening folio with illuminated headpiece and text in clouds on gold ground, colophon with date of AH 1016, unbound, some folios possibly missing, in old leather fitted case
Text panel 7.5/8 x 4.3/8in. (19.5 x 11.3cm.); folio 11.1/2 x 7.3/8in. (29.2 x 18.8cm.)
An Iranian export stamp on the first folio is dated AH 1339/1920-21 AD

Lot Essay

The author Mirza 'Abd al-Wahhab Mu'tamid al-Dawla, whose pen name was Nishat, was poet and secretary to Fath 'Ali Shah. He was born in AH 1175 to a noble family in Isfahan and moved to Tehran to join the court of Fath 'Ali Shah, who made him minister of Foreign Affairs with the title Mu'tamid al-Dawla (Mo'tamed ol-Dauleh). He was an accomplished calligrapher and poet, also the tutor to one of the Shah's favourite wives, Tavus Khanum Taj al-Saltanah. The Ganjineh was his most copied work. He died in AH 1244.
