Lot Essay

A Qur'an in the Ghassan I. Shaker Collection, dated to AH 1211, 18 years later than the present manuscript, is illuminated in a very similar style, with an identical palette of red, green and black. In his discussion of the manuscript, Nabil Safwat indicates that 'this interesting manuscript, probably originating from somewhere in the vast area between China and India, [dates] from a period when few other examples are known" (Nabil F. Safwat, Qur'ans and other manuscripts from the collection of Ghassan I. Shaker, Golden Pages, Oxford, 2000,cat.39, pp.170-172).

For a manuscript of probably identical origin and from the same school of illumination, see the preceding lot.
