Lot Essay
This seminal work on the history of the Mongols and Ilkhanids is composed by his author, Wassaf al-Hadra, as a supplement to Tarikh-i Jahan Gusha (History of the World Conqueror) of 'Ata Malik Juwayni. The name of the Governor of Baghdad, 'Ata Malik, appears in the preface and is presented as Wassaf's patron. The work comprises an introduction and five volumes devoted to the historical accounts of the Ilkhanid rule from the death of Mongke Khan to the middle of the reign of Abu Sa'id Bahadur (r.1316-35 AD). In his fourth volume, Wassaf includes excerpts from Tarikh-i Jahan Gusha including Genghis Khan's conquests of Khurasan and Transoxiana, a summary of the history of the Khwarazmshahis, details about the Isma'ilis and Hassan al-Sabah's war against the Seljuks.
Important for his historical details about the Mongols and Ilkhanids, the Tarikh-i Wassaf also gives a precious account of the life in 14th century Shiraz and Fars. It was first published in Europe in 1855, in an Austrian edition in German by Purgstall ('Abd al-Muhammad Ayati, in Gholamali Haddad Adel, Mohammad Jafar Elmi, Hassan Taromi-Rad ed., Historical Sources of the Islamic World, Selected entries from Encyclopaedia of the World of Islam, London, 2013, pp.149-151).
