Lot Essay

Basins of this size might have been used in combination with a ewer for ritual ablutions, such as a tombak example in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art in Istanbul (The Anatolian Civilisations, exhibition catalogue, Istanbul, 1983, cat.E344, pp.304-305). A fine tombak basin, with similar floral decoration, is in the Kuyas Collection (Nurhan Atasoy, Splendors of the Ottoman Sultans, exhibition catalogue, 1992, p.214). It is noted for both examples that this type of very large basin was used to wash feet during ritual purification. With a diameter of 63.5cm, our basin is impressive and larger than the two examples mentioned here.
