A gilt-metal velvet-covered frame containing thirteen portrait miniatures depicting members of the German nobility, including: Princess Louise Charlotte of Denmark, Landgravine of Hesse-Cassel (1789-1864) and her husband, Landgrave William of Hesse-Cassel (1787-1867); Princess Louise of Nassau-Usingen (1751-1816), née Princess of Waldeck and Pyrmont and her husband, Prince Frederick of Nassau-Usingen (1738-1816); Princess Marie of Hesse-Cassel, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1796-1880) and her husband George, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1779-1860); three of their children, Frederick William (1819-1904), later Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Duchess Luisa of Mecklenburg (1818-1842) and Duchess Caroline of Mecklenburg (1821-1876) as children; Landgrave Frederick III of Hesse-Cassel (1747-1837) and his wife Princess Caroline of Nassau-Usingen (1762-1823); three of their children, Princes Frederick (1790-1876) and George (1793-1881) of Hesse-Cassel and Princess Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge née Princess of Hesse-Cassel (1797-1889), and her husband, Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850)

Lot Essay

Two miniatures by Unger, identical to those of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850) and Prince George of Hesse-Cassel (1793-1881), were sold Christie’s, 27 November 2013, lots 210 and 211 respectively.
