JACOB CHRISTIAN SCHAEFFER (1718-1790)
Fungorum qui in Bavaria et Palatinatu circa Ratisbonam nascuntur icones nativis coloribus expressae. Regensburg: H. G. Zunkel [volume III for the author], 1762-1770 [but 1771]. 3 volumes (of 4) only. 4° (266 x 214mm.) Half-titles to vols I and II, parallel text in Latin and German, engraved portrait frontispiece by G. P. Nusbiegel after I. F. Franck, engraved additional title to volume I and II printed in sepia, 300 hand-coloured engraved plates by various engravers after Sophie Beez, I. St. Loibel, and less frequently J. J. Rothermund and Schauer. (Lacking additional engraved title in vol. III, plate 101 misregistered, occasional light stains.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt edges (spines rubbed, corners bumped, title label on spine of vol. III almost detached). Provenance: erased stamp on verso of titles.
FIRST EDITION, A FINE COLOURED COPY. A Bavarian botanist, zoologist and clergyman, Schaeffer succeeded in assembling a quite astonishing variety of fungi from a single region, and was among the first to investigate local fungal flora this closely -- the hand-colouring of the plates, the majority after Sophie Beez, is delicate and subtle in its many variations, making this not only one of the earliest but one of the most attractive colour-plate books on fungi. The plates numbered 1-199 are not double-sided, as described by Stafleu and Cowan, but have the text printed on the verso, or are otherwise blank; plates 200-300 are mostly double-sided as usual. Stafleu and Cowan erroneously call for the engraved title in volume I rather than volume II. Nissen BBI 1744; Volbracht, 1878; Stafleu and Cowan 10.476.
