RANDOLPH BEZZANT HOLMES (1888-1973)
An extensive collection of scenes and portrait relating to the Third Anglo-Afghan War and the North-West Frontier, Peshawar, c. 1919. 50 gelatin silver prints (mainly c. 245 x 290 mm or the reverse) most signed in the negative and stamped on the verso, 6 of these hand-coloured by Holmes c. 1940s and mounted on card and signed in the print or the mount, together with one smaller print by Holmes (c. 85 x 140 mm); one of the monochrome prints mounted on card and with six small prints (c. 85 x 100 mm) probably by another mounted on the verso. 9 prints framed and glazed, the rest together loosely inserted in a folder including a printed list of views issued by Holmes. (Some wear at the edges including occasional small losses or short tears, some of these repaired at an early date, occasional light yellowing, one print with pen mark and deleted pencilled annotations, a small number of prints creased.)
THE NORTHWEST FRONTIER DURING THE THIRD AFGHAN WAR. The group includes three studio portraits finely hand-coloured by the photographer., and scenes include: a camel convoy entering the Khyber Pass, a two-piece panoramic view of the encampment at Landi Kotal, a view of the battle ground for the engagement on 11 May together with remains of the old Buddhist stupa, the Dakka plain with Fort Robert and the Kabul River, and others. Seventeen of the prints have printed captions pasted on the recto near the bottom edge, probably as issued; these were part of the original set of 18 issued before Holmes expanded the selection. Together with an oil on canvas by Holmes 'The Mighty Ice Walls Tower to the Sky', signed and dated 1945, c.560 x 450mm, framed.
