Lot Essay

Another version of this celebrated bronze by Troubetzkoy, signed and dated 'Paul Troubetzkoy/1899', was included in the second exhibition organized by Mir Iskusstva in 1900 and is now held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery. The model was widely shown in Russia and abroad during the artist's lifetime, including further exhibitions in Paris 1900 and 1904, New York 1911, Chicago 1912, and Rome 1913. As a result of the popularity of the model in both plaster and bronze, versions are now held in many important public and private collections. Notably, related bronze casts of this bust can be seen at the Leo Tolstoy Sate Museum, Moscow, and at the Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy (Yasnaya Polyana).
