Lot Essay

Very few paintings are known by van der Hulst, who had a very short career. Dated paintings such as the present lot are recorded only between 1639 and 1646. The influence of his townsman Jan van Goyen is evident in van der Hulst's tonality and subject matter, in this case, Egmond, located on the North Sea coast a few miles west of Leiden.
