Lot Essay

Frans Francken II painted the present composition several times (see: U. Härting, Frans Francken der Jüngere (1581-1642), Freren, 1989, pp. 306-10, nos. 268-75). The present composition is closest to a picture in the City Art Gallery, Manchester (op. cit., no. 272).
