2 volumes, 12º (203 x 135mm). Without half-titles. (Spotting throughout, the first title stained, occasional damptaining, the last three leaves of vol. 1 remargined, repaired tear in last leaf.) Contemporary Russian burgundy quarter sheep, sprinkled edges (spines worn, spine ends of vol. 1 repaired). Provenance: Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Piatnitskii (inscription dated 18 November 1880) -- small indistinct stamp on title of volume 2 -- Cherkesov (stamp on last leaf of volume 1).

FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S MOST FAMOUS NOVEL. Crime and Punishment was serialised the previous year in the journal Russkii Vestnik. An epilogue was added at the insistence of the publishers who found the ending unacceptable to the general public. The paper stock used was of poor quality and copies are very seldom found without spotting. Kilgour 280.
