HOWARD, Frederick, Earl of Carlisle. The Father’s Revenge … a new edition. London: William Bulmer, 1812. 8 ° (179 x 113mm). Contemporary straight-grained green morocco gilt by C. Hering, with his ticket, covers panelled with rules and palmettes, inner corner-pieces, gilt spine compartments directly lettered, gilt turn-ins enclosing cream silk doublures, gilt edges with 19th-century fore-edge painting of Ravensworth Castle, Durham.

Together with another 49 morocco-bound volumes from the collection of John G. Murray, most with topograpical views on the fore-edge, apart from Shakespeare's Plays (London, 1826) with a portrait of the poet, and a 3-volume Bible with scenes from scripture. Earliest in date are: Seneca’s Tragoediae (Leyden, 1661) and two editions of Juvenal and Perseus (Leyden, 1664 and Amsterdam, 1784), 8°, each with fore-edge painting of Norwich, bookplate of Thomas M. Lowndes and ownership inscription of James Rushton, Norwich 1809; also John Scott’s Practical Discourses (London, 1700-01), 2 volumes, 8°, with fore-edge paintings of St. Alban’s (one binding damaged). The other volumes, published in the early 19th-century, include: Walpole’s Catalogue of Royal and Noble Authors. (London, 1806), 5 volumes, 8°, volume I with fore-edge painting of Strawberry Hill (paintings not present in the other volumes of the set); Cowper’s works in three editions of 2 volumes, all with fore-edge paintings of Olney; 6 volumes by Walter Scott with fore-edge views of Dumothar Castle, Lilburn Tower Northumberland, Flamborough Head, Carrick Castle, Brancepeth Castle Durham, and one other unidentified; Robert Dodsley’s The Economy of Human Life (London, 1806), with fore-edge view of Syston Park, Lincolnshire, 'the old home of the famous library'; Thomson’s Seasons (London, 1811) with fore-edge of Lady Southeran’s Villa at Thames Ditton; Lord Thurlow’s Poems (London, 1813), dampstained but with an interesting fore-edge of ‘Shakespeare’s House’; Terence Afer's The Andrian (London, 1814), bound for presentation by the translator (binder's ticket removed), with fore-edge view of Tunbridge Wells; and an 1825 almanac showing Battersea Bridge.
