Lot Essay

The first confrontation between a British and American frigate and reportedly the time when the Constitution earned her name of 'Old Ironsides'. After a gallant fight, Captain James Dacres of the British Guerriére was forced to surrender to the American Captain Isaac Hull. The British ship was, unfortunately, so badly damaged that it was destroyed by Hull.
