Lot Essay
Built to the lines originally drawn by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens for Harold Vanderbilt's Ranger syndicate for the 1937 America's Cup and adapted by Hoek Design, Lionheart is the first of an elegant new breed of aluminium J-class yachts afloat today. Built by Claasen Shipyards in Zandaam, Holland and launched in 2010, Lionheart measures142 feet in length with a 21 ½ foot beam. Arriving on the international racing circuit in 2012, she immediately proved that she was a force to reckon with by winning the Hundred Guineas Cup at Cowes.
In the present work Lionheart is leading the fleet and storming to the finish of Thursday’s race, with her spinnaker set, in a steady fifteen knot breeze. The sun is breaking through the clouds and a flotilla of spectators yachts is observed astern of her. Lionheart was the first to finish, taking line honours, with Velsheda, Rainbow and Ranger bringing up the rear. On corrected time, however, the race was won by Velsheda with Lionheart being relegated to second place and Rainbow and Ranger, third and fourth respectively.
