Lot Essay

For an illustration of a similar tile painted with a Roman soldier and another with a Turkish soldier, see Jan Pluis, The Dutch Tile, Designs and names, 1570-1930, Leiden, 1998, p. 355, nos. A.02.06.10 and A.02.06.11.

These tiles were used as prototypes for the commercial production of modern versions by the well known interiors company Fired Earth.
