Lot Essay
The present lot is a copy after Paul de Lamerie's cup and cover of 1739, described by P. A. S. Phillips as 'one of the most notable of de Lamerie's masterpieces, showing him at his apogee' (P. A. S. Philips, Paul de Lamerie: His Life and Work, London, 1935, p. 103). The Lamerie example is engraved with the arms of John Gawler Bridge of Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, who presented the cup to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in 1839.
