A MANDARIN AND LADY'S COSTUME AND A GROUP OF RELATED TEXTILES
LATE 19TH CENTURY
It comprises lady's costumes including a robe, skirt, vest, two sleeve bands, a hat, peacock feather plume, two kingfisher feather hair pins, and a mandarin's costume including two robes, a hat and necklace; together with three banners with calligraphic inscriptions relating to Dr Brander's work in Yingkou, China.

Lot Essay

These textiles are believed to have been given to Dr Thomas Laurie Brander M.D., J.P., of Glentower, Fort William and his wife in the late 19th century by local townsfolk for his help during the first Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). He travelled to China with his wife in the late 19th century as a medical missionary for the Irish Presbyterian Church. He was also awarded the Order of the Double Dragon, Type 3, Third Class for his work offered in this sale as lot 1221.
