'This collection of plates is the most charming that has ever appeared on the fountains of Rome and its environs ... all copies examined vary in numbering and arrangement of plates' (Fowler). The precise date of the original publication is unknown but c. 1675-1685. The early impressions do not have the plate numbering which appeared later, perhaps with this edition, around 1691 (Berlin Kat.).
