BECKFORD, William (1759-1844) -- BRITTON, John (1771-1857). Graphical and Literary Illustrations of Fonthill Abbey. London: for the author, sold by Longman, 1823. Imperial 4° (348 x 265mm). Engraved frontispiece and additional title, title with woodcut vignette, 9 plates after G. Cattermole and others, including 2 hand-coloured aquatints, half-title. (Uncoloured plates spotted.) Contemporary straight-grained maroon morocco in cathedral style, covers with pair of perpendicular Gothic windows within elaborate gilt and blind frame, gilt spine, cream silk endpapers and gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Thorold Syston Park (bookplate) – Charles Francis Bell (1871-1966, art historian; booklabel). ONE OF 300 LARGE PAPER COPIES . Published when Fonthill had already been bought from Beckford by the gunpowder millionaire, George Farquhar. The binding on this copy fits the gothic theme particularly well. RIBA I, 416.
RUTTER, John (1796-1851). Delineations of Fonthill and its Abbey. Shaftsbury: published by the author & London: Charles Knight, Longman [etc.], 1823. Imperial 4° (347 x 275mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and additional title, 11 plates, including one other hand-coloured aquatint, folding lithographic map hand-coloured in outline, 16 wood-engravings, half-title. (Uncoloured plates spotted at margins). Black half morocco, 1924, spine gilt, top edge gilt. LARGE PAPER COPY. The second and much more lavish of the two guides produced by Rutter. It appeared after Beckford had ceased to own Fonthill. Abbey Scenery 418; Millard 72; Riba III, 2881.
The Valuable Library of Books, in Fonthill Abbey … which will be sold by auction by Mr. Phillips. At the Abbey: September-October 1823. 8°. Engraved frontispiece. (Frontispiece spotted, some spotting and staining of text, heaviest near end.) Old boards (rebacked in red calf). Provenance: R.J. Palmer (signature on free endpaper). This celebrated auction was held by Henry Phillips on behalf of George Farquhar, following Beckford's cancellation of the Christie's sale the year previously.
