A BRITISH PATTERN 1803 FOOT GUARDS OFFICER'S SWORD
CIRCA 1814
With slightly curved single-edged fullered blade double-edged towards the point and etched on the right side with a 'GR' cypher above the figure of a Guards officer and with the Royal Arms and 'WARRANTED' on the left side, each side of the blade with faded traces of original blued finish, gilt-brass stirrup-hilt with slotted guard pierced with scrolls and knuckle-guard with pierced 'GR' cypher, original wire-bound shagreen-covered grip, and lion's-head pommel, in original black leather scabbard with gilt-brass mounts (some wear to gilding throughout, blade discoloured, etching worn, leather flaking on scabbard)

Provenance
Probably acquired by Lord FitzRoy Somerset when he became a Captain and Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards in 1814. The 1st Foot Guards gained the name 'Grenadier' in July 1815 by Royal Proclamation in recognition of the part the regiment played in defeating Grenadiers of the French Garde Impériale at Waterloo.
