Lot Essay

This picture relates to a bust-length portrait of Lady Mary Forbes that was sold at Sotheby's, London, 16 February 1971, lot 37. The latter bears the same eulogising biography as the present lot, extolling Lady Forbes's 'Heavenly Charity' and 'true Piety'. She was married to Admiral the Hon. John Forbes (see lot 28), and was maternal grandmother to Lady FitzRoy Somerset, later Lady Raglan.
