Lot Essay

Excluding the landscape, the present work closely relates to George Dawe's (1781-1829) 1825 Portrait of Alexander I against the Cameron Gallery (State Russian Museum, St Petersburg), in which the Tsar is depicted in a frock-coat and peak cap at Tsarskoe Selo, his favourite residence.
